I really appreciate how there are always opportunities outside of my course to develop my musical abilities, whether this is through competitions, clubs or other creative projects.
Course
Music BMus (Hons)Entry year
2024What do you like about your course and why?
I love my course because there is so much variation in the content we learn and there are so many opportunities to explore the different aspects of music and develop interests in specific areas you might not have considered before.
It also means that you will always have the option of selecting modules you enjoy and learning about your specific interests. It’s great to have joint modules with the Creative Music Technology and Music and Sound Recording (Tonmeister) students because it invites us to collaborate and utilise all our different skills to work together on creative projects.
Also, the lecturers are very friendly and always willing to offer help if you’re finding anything challenging, and being a small course, you get to know the lecturers and your peers really well, which establishes a more intimate educational environment.
What do you enjoy most about Surrey?
I really appreciate how there are always opportunities outside of my course to develop my musical abilities, whether this is through competitions, clubs or other creative projects. It’s great to be able to use skills you’ve learnt from the course and apply them to different projects to increase your experience and prepare you for future external work in the industry.
Also, many of the experiences the university offers allow for networking and collaborative opportunities, so you can meet new people and establish a working relationship with them. This prepares you very well for the future and allows you to understand working with other people in a semi-professional environment.
What do you want to do when you graduate?
When I graduate, I want to be able to establish a career that allows me to work in several different areas of the music industry. My interests lie mostly in composition and performance so I would love to be able to compose for many different ensembles and genres, including theatre and film. However, I would also like to perform as a pit musician or opera singer.
What's your advice for new students?
The best advice I could give a prospective student is to get involved. The music department is such a collaborative space and if you’re willing to put yourself out there and involve yourself in any offered opportunities, you’ll meet and work with some amazing people and establish relationships that’ll last.
