"I currently work as a Quality Release Scientist at New England Biolabs, which is also where I completed my Professional Training placement year."

What were the best things about your course?

What I enjoyed most about my course was the combination of engaging scientific learning, hands-on laboratory experience, and the opportunity to complete an industrial placement year. Studying Biomedical Science at the University of Surrey allowed me to grow academically and personally, while also building confidence in a professional setting. Even during the challenges of Covid-19, the University remained supportive and adaptable. I made lifelong friendships and have many happy memories of my time there.

What do you do now? How did your degree from Surrey help you achieve this?

I currently work as a Quality Release Scientist at New England Biolabs in Abingdon, which is also where I completed my Professional Training placement year during my course. My role involves ensuring that the products we manufacture meet the required quality standards by performing a variety of QC tests, requiring strong analytical, laboratory and problem-solving skills. I also heavily support our ISO 9001 and ISO 13485 Quality Management Systems (QMS) by revising documents, implementing continuous improvements, and conducting internal audits.

My degree at from Surrey played a major role in helping me achieve this position. The course provided a strong scientific foundation alongside extensive practical laboratory experience, while the industrial placement year gave me invaluable exposure to working in a professional environment. Completing my placement at New England Biolabs allowed me to develop technical skills, industry knowledge and professional confidence, which ultimately helped me secure a full-time role with the company after graduating.

What’s your advice to current students?

My advice to current students would be to make the most of every opportunity available to you, especially placement years, practical laboratory experience and all the networking opportunities the University has to offer. My placement year was invaluable in helping me develop both professionally and personally, and ultimately it led to my full-time career after graduating.

I would also encourage students to stay open-minded and proactive, even when things do not go exactly as planned. Part of my degree took place during the Covid-19 pandemic, which brought many challenges, but it also taught me resilience, adaptability and the importance of maintaining a positive mindset.

Most importantly, enjoy the experience. I genuinely had some of the best years of my life studying at Surrey. The friendships, experiences and skills I gained were just as valuable as the degree itself.
