"This course has reignited my passion for leadership in clinical education and shown me how powerful teaching and mentorship can be in shaping practice."
Why did you choose to study your course at Surrey?
I chose Surrey because of its outstanding academic reputation and commitment to high-quality teaching. Having previously completed my undergraduate nursing degree here, I was confident I’d be returning to a supportive and engaging learning environment that fosters both academic and professional development. The vibrant campus community and the University’s convenient location made my decision even easier. Surrey’s dedication to student success and its focus on developing individuals in healthcare made it the ideal place to continue my studies with the Education for Health Professionals MA.
What are the best things about Surrey and your course?
One of the things I’ve really valued about studying for my masters is how well the course is structured and how approachable the tutors are. From the start, there’s been clear communication and a real sense that you’re supported, both academically and personally. The library resources and access to online materials have also been helpful, especially when juggling study with work. What stood out most to me was the learning environment: it’s inclusive and encouraging, and no question ever feels too small to ask, which helped me build confidence as I went along.
A couple of the modules have really made a difference for me as they helped me look at my current role as a practice development nurse in a new light. I feel more confident in designing and delivering training that’s engaging and meaningful for both newly registered and non-registered staff. I’ve also become more comfortable taking the lead on educational projects and creating a positive learning culture in the clinical setting.
Balancing study with a full-time job is never easy, but the way the course is set up made it manageable. It felt like the programme really understood the demands that come with working in healthcare. There was enough flexibility to make everything work and I always felt supported. The tutors communicated clearly, the resources were easy to access, and the overall environment made it possible to stay focused and engaged while still growing in my clinical role.
What are the best things about life here as a postgraduate student?
One of the things I really appreciated was how familiar everything felt. As I’d done my undergraduate degree here, coming back just felt comfortable and reassuring and it made the transition into postgraduate study much easier. It was also lovely to study alongside colleagues on some of the same modules. That sense of shared experience made a big difference, and I really enjoyed being able to show them around the Stag Hill campus when we had sessions there. It brought back a lot of good memories.
What are your career plans?
The course has already opened exciting new pathways in my career. It’s strengthened my teaching skills and deepened my understanding of educational theory in healthcare, which has directly enhanced my current role.
This course has also reignited my passion for leadership in clinical education and shown me how powerful teaching and mentorship can be in shaping practice. Looking ahead, I’m keen to explore roles in higher education, supporting and inspiring future nurses during their training. Whether in a university or through continued leadership in clinical education, this programme has equipped me with the knowledge and confidence to help develop a skilled, compassionate healthcare workforce.
What advice do you have for students thinking of doing this course?
I’d honestly say go for it. Whether you’re returning to study after some time away or continuing straight through, there’s a lot of support here to help you find your feet. For me, the programme has strengthened my teaching skills, boosted my confidence and opened new career possibilities in both clinical education and potentially higher education. It’s been a really rewarding experience, both professionally and personally.
