Graduate profile

Nouman C.

'The course was rigorous and up to date with industry trends. With a strong emphasis on hands-on, practical work - not just theory. That practical experience has proven incredibly useful in my current role and continues to shape how I approach real-world problems.'

Why did you choose to study your course at Surrey?

I chose the MSc in Computer Vision, Robotics and Machine Learning at the University of Surrey because of the outstanding reputation of the Centre for Vision, Speech and Signal Processing (CVSSP). The centre is internationally recognised for its cutting-edge research, and the faculty members are highly regarded with extensive publications in AI and computer vision. It was the perfect environment to grow academically and professionally.

What are the best things about Surrey and your course?

The vibrant campus life, diverse and inclusive student community, excellent library facilities, peaceful spots like the lake, and the availability of a dedicated prayer room all made my time at Surrey truly enjoyable.

The course itself was rigorous and up to date with industry trends, with a strong emphasis on hands-on, practical work — not just theory. That practical experience has proven incredibly useful in my current role and continues to shape how I approach real-world problems.

What are the best things about life here as a postgraduate student?

The friendships I formed during my time at Surrey are lifelong. I had the chance to connect with people from all over the world, including Palestine, Romania, India, Greece, Egypt — you name it.

That global network and shared experience were among the most rewarding aspects of postgraduate life.

What are your career plans?

I'm currently working as a Data Scientist at The Open University. My goal is to grow into a Senior Data Scientist or AI Engineer role, working on impactful projects that apply machine learning and computer vision to solve real-world problems.

What advice do you have for students thinking of doing this course?

Start thinking about your dissertation early. Identify which faculty members align with your research interests, and aim to work closely with them. A strong dissertation can significantly boost your profile and help you stand out when applying for jobs after graduation.
