"This course has really allowed me to reflect on my practice and build myself up as an educator. I have developed so many skills and have been able to put them into practice to make my teaching better."
Why did you choose to study your course at Surrey?
I started as an undergraduate at Surrey on the Adult Nursing BSc in 2015 and fell in love with the University and its amazing facilities to support me becoming a nurse. I graduated in 2018 as a proud Surrey student.
Years later, starting my new role as Practice Development Nurse in the Education and Practice Development Team at Surrey and Sussex Healthcare Trust, I wanted to return to Surrey to undertake a CPD module in supporting educators in practice. This one module ended up in me taking the whole masters programme as I felt so supported and inspired by the faculty and peers in my class. This programme has exposed me to so many different things, including undertaking research, quality improvement, leadership and, of course, being the best educator I can be.
What are the best things about Surrey and your course?
I was so inspired by the lecturers on the course and they encouraged me to keep going with my studies even when I thought I would never be capable of achieving a masters degree.
I have learnt so much from my course. It’s really allowed me to reflect on my practice and build myself up as an educator. I have developed so many skills and have been able to put them into practice to make my teaching better.
What are the best things about being a postgraduate student at Surrey?
I remain a proud Surrey student undertaking my postgraduate study. I am so grateful for the support given by the great network of colleagues I have met over the years and thoroughly enjoyed the modules I have undertaken.
The environment here is so inclusive and courses are well thought out to ensure you are getting the best experience possible. I am also so grateful I have been able to undertake this course whilst working full time in the NHS as the content is manageable and the library team and academics are only an email away if you need support.
What are your career plans?
I want to remain in education as I am so passionate about providing high-level support and training for our future healthcare professionals to give the best care to patients. The research element of the course was very new to me, but I’ve loved it. I’ve enjoyed the experience of learning new things and I look forward to how I can continue developing research within my future career.
What advice do you have for students thinking of doing this course?
I would say absolutely go for it, you can do it! I doubted myself and never thought I would be capable of undertaking a masters, however it is surprising how quickly time flies and before you know it all your hard work has paid off.
