I enjoyed absolutely everything about the year. Moving away from home and becoming part of a cohort of 23 passionate performers was incredibly inspiring. Having the chance to experience a full year of professional training has put me in such a strong position for the years ahead.
Course
Musical Theatre CertHEWhy did you choose to do a foundation year?
Drama schools are extremely competitive to get in to, and I was recommended the foundation course after auditioning for the BA. It was the best thing that could have possibly happened for me!
What did you enjoy about it?
I enjoyed absolutely everything about the year. Moving away from home and becoming part of a cohort of 23 passionate performers was incredibly inspiring. Having the chance to experience a full year of professional training has put me in such a strong position for the years ahead. It’s given me a much deeper understanding of why we train the way we do.
A lot of the work in a drama school environment, especially the approach to voice, singing and dance, is very different from what many people are used to (I had never done voice work before doing the foundation!). So having a full year to learn and adjust to these methods has made everything so much clearer and has given me a solid foundation to build on going forward.
What support have you received at Surrey?
GSA is such a warm environment and everyone is so approachable if you have any issues. The Surrey campus is also there to help you with everything, with an on-campus building called MySurrey Hive which can assist you with any issues you may have from finance to your social life.
How has your foundation year had an impact on you?
A foundation year really does exactly what it says on the tin, it gives you the grounding, structure, and confidence to go on and do exactly what you want to do.
For me, it provided the skills, confidence and preparation I needed to move onto a full degree in Musical Theatre, which I am incredibly lucky to be studying at GSA, where my journey first began.
