"Surrey is deeply committed to developing practitioners who can lead, influence and innovate within modern healthcare systems, which aligns perfectly with my role as an Acute Oncology Nurse."

Why did you choose to study your course at Surrey?

I chose to study the MSc Healthcare Practice at Surrey because it offers the academic depth, clinical relevance and leadership-focused training that align directly with my professional responsibilities as an Acute Oncology Advanced Nurse Practitioner and Teenage and Young Adult Cancer Lead. Working as a cancer nurse I strongly believe the impact of the knowledge and skills that is acquired through professional education can support the care provided to cancer patients.

The programme stood out for its strong integration of evidence-based practice, advanced clinical decision-making, and application of knowledge to support delivering high-quality care to complex cancer populations.

The University’s reputation for excellence in healthcare education, combined with its research active faculty, also appealed to me. The teaching faculty are very encouraging and supportive during the module; they are always willing to offer their valuable expertise to support students.

What are the best things about Surrey and your course?

Surrey is deeply committed to developing practitioners who can lead, influence and innovate within modern healthcare systems, which aligns perfectly with my role as an acute oncology nurse. The course structure recognises the realities of frontline healthcare roles, making it possible to study at an advanced level without compromising my work–life balance. Every module has strengthened my ability to deliver high-quality care and shape services for young people and cancer patients.

What are your career plans?

My career plan is to continue developing as an advanced nurse practitioner within cancer services, with a focus on strengthening and improving the acute oncology and young people’s cancer pathways. I aim to lead on high-quality, evidence-based care across these pathways and contribute to service development that enhances patient experience and outcomes.

What advice do you have for students thinking of doing this course?

This course is designed for clinicians who want to grow, both in their clinical pathway and leadership. My advice is:

  • Be prepared to balance study with practice as it requires planning and commitment. The learning is worth it.
  • The course builds on what you already know so bring real cases, real challenges and real questions into your assignments.
  • Engage with the leadership content even if you do not see yourself as a leader; you will by the end of the course!
  • The lecturers are approachable and genuinely invested in your development, so make use of them and ask for support.
  • Remember why you are doing the course, keep your purpose at the heart of your learning.
