Over the summer, I had the privilege of working at Samlon Recordings in Johannesburg, South Africa. This experience not only deepened my technical knowledge but also exposed me to new cultural perspectives and professional practices in a global setting.

The Film Production and Broadcast Engineering course is unique in its combination of the creative and technical sides of film and broadcast and there is such variety in module content: from filming, editing and programme development, to coding and technical essays. 

I’ve always had a passion for film and TV and it wasn’t until I discovered this course that I found out about the possibility of working on the more engineering/technical side of industry, which really appealed to me.

My main role as a creative producer was to create 25 or 30 second trailers for National Geographic shows. It was an amazing opportunity; as part of my role I had a lot of creative freedom and had to come up with concepts, pitch them to the managers, and then edit and write the script for the promos.

I’m passionate about the Creative Music Technology course because it’s so unique. It has taught me to think outside the box and has challenged me to compose within genres of music I didn’t even know about three years ago".

At Surrey, I love the flexibility and eclecticism of the modules - you can choose whether you want to take a more academic or practical path (or have an equal split). I’m also very grateful for the opportunities we’re offered (free concerts; performance opportunities; visiting lecturers; etc.) and the lovely friends I have made through the course". 

I spent my placement at Sky Production Services as a Trainee Dubbing Mixer. I did a lot of editing (dialogue, voiceover) as well as syncing and preparing projects for others in the department. The highlights were getting to mix two shows for Sky Kids and Sky Arts.

I was attracted to some of the most unusual parts of music where there were no strict Western Classical limits, and experimentation was celebrated. This is where Surrey stood out from other universities – the possibilities felt so limitless
