Our students share their thoughts and feelings about what makes Surrey so right.
LEVEL OF STUDY
I spent my placement at Sky Production Services as a Trainee Dubbing Mixer. I did a lot of editing (dialogue, voiceover) as well as syncing and preparing projects for others in the department. The highlights were getting to mix two shows for Sky Kids and Sky Arts.
I was attracted to some of the most unusual parts of music where there were no strict Western Classical limits, and experimentation was celebrated. This is where Surrey stood out from other universities – the possibilities felt so limitless
For my professional training placement, I went to London to work with the National Youth Orchestra (NYO) and am now with Guildford Jazz working as a student ambassador.
The academic staff are absolutely wonderful and one element about the course that really struck me was how genuinely passionate they were about their chosen specialism.
The Music and Sound Recording (Tonmeister) course is the best of both worlds. You get to be completely immersed in the world of music while simultaneously learning about the interesting technological side of how sound is produced, manipulated and recorded.
I will always associate Surrey with that feeling of belonging and creation
The single most important thing that came from my time at Surrey was that everyone I work with now came directly from, or through, the music connections we made at Surrey.
Surrey was my absolute dream choice of University. I only had one back up option but I had my heart set on coming here; the campus is beautiful but the Creative Music Technology course was what really drew me in. It had the right balance of teaching hours versus time to hone our practice, as well as lots of module options that really gave me the flexibility to explore everything I was interested in.
My favourite thing about this course is its ethos of finding beauty in every style of music possible. The music lecturers are some of the nicest people you’ll ever meet, and their love and passion for what they do is so infectious.
