What you will study
On our LLB Law with Business course, you’ll gain a deep understanding of the main areas of legal knowledge, including law as it regulates:
- The functions of the state (public law and criminal law)
- Relations between private individuals (contract law and tort law)
- The ownership and control of land and other property (land law, and equity and trusts).
The Law with Business LLB combines the core subjects required for a qualifying law degree with the opportunity to specialise in business and management. It is ideal for students seeking legal knowledge alongside commercial insight, whether or not they intend to pursue a traditional legal career.
You will develop a strong understanding of legal, business, and ethical concepts, including corporate law, commercial law, and regulatory compliance, while exploring how law and business intersect in addressing contemporary challenges such as sustainability and emerging technologies like AI.
Taught jointly by the Surrey Law School and Surrey School of Business, the programme offers flexible module choices across areas such as marketing, finance, and HR. You will gain key transferable skills—including critical thinking, problem-solving, negotiation, and communication—through practical learning such as case studies, simulations, and group projects.
Professional skills
A dedicated Professional Training Preparation module and applied learning opportunities further enhance your employability and readiness for a wide range of careers.
All second-year law students are enrolled on a Professional Training Preparation module which enables you to develop key employability skills, complete a law-specific version of the University's Employability Award and hear from a wide variety of voices from practice (both legal and non-legal).

Bar Standards Board compliance
Our Law LLB (Hons) complies with Part 2A of the Bar Standards Board (BSB) Bar Qualification Manual. The BSB's Academic Component of Bar Training requires students wishing to become a barrister to have completed the seven foundations of legal knowledge. All our LLB programmes include compulsory modules which satisfy the standards and content set by the BSB for successful evidence of these seven foundations.
Foundation year
If you don’t meet our entry requirements, you might still be able to apply for this degree with a Law with Foundation Year. This is an extra year of study to develop your skills and make it easier for you to get started at university. On successful completion of your foundation year, you’ll be ready to progress to the first year of your degree.

Timetable
New students will receive their personalised timetable during Welcome Week. In later semesters, at least one week before the start of the semester.
Scheduled teaching can take place on any day of the week (Monday – Friday), with part-time classes normally scheduled on one or two days. Wednesday afternoons tend to be for sports and cultural activities.

This course is based at Stag Hill campus. Stag Hill is the University's main campus and where the majority of our courses are taught.

A law degree can open many doors, not just careers as a solicitor or barrister. This course helps you develop valuable transferable skills, including commercial awareness and legal knowledge that employers in the UK and around the world seek.
There are many additional areas where a Law with Business degree is highly valuable, particularly where legal insight and commercial awareness intersect. For example, graduates can work in risk and compliance, ensuring organisations meet regulatory requirements; consulting, advising businesses on strategy, governance, and legal risk; and banking and financial services, where knowledge of regulation and transactions is essential.
Other key areas include international trade and supply chain management, especially with growing focus on sustainability and due diligence; technology and data protection, including privacy, AI governance, and cybersecurity; and intellectual property and innovation management, supporting businesses in protecting and commercialising their assets.
Graduates of the Law and Business LLB are also well suited to roles in public policy and regulation, human resources and employment relations, and entrepreneurship or start-ups, where understanding legal structures, contracts, and risk is crucial. Together, these areas highlight the versatility of a law and business skillset across a rapidly evolving global economy.

Our Court of the Future is the perfect venue to run practical workshops to demonstrate legal practice and to give you first-hand experience of advocacy in a court setting. It allows you to have mock trials and moot courts in a real adversarial setting. It is comprised of:
- A raised judicial “bench” and a layout mirroring a typical UK court
- Video-conferencing hardware (telepresence system including multiple screens, cameras, microphones, audio system)
- Video-conferencing software
- Digital court recording system with speech recognition and transcription support

Applicants taking the Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) will receive our standard A-level offer for this programme, plus an alternate offer of one A-level grade lower, subject to achieving an A grade in the EPQ. The one grade reduction will not apply to any required subjects.
Applicants can only receive one grade reduction from the published grades, an EPQ grade reduction can’t be applied in addition to other grade reductions made through other schemes such as Contextual Admissions or In2Surrey.

Professional training placement year fees are approximately 20% of the full-time UK fees of the academic year in which you undertake your placement.
- Fees will increase for each year of your programme as detailed in our tuition fee increases disclaimer.
Payment schedule
- Students with Tuition Fee Loan: the Student Loans Company pay fees in line with their schedule.
- Students without a Tuition Fee Loan: pay their fees either in full at the beginning of the programme or in two instalments as follows:
- 50% payable 10 days after the invoice date (expected to be during October to November of each academic year).
- 50% in January of the same academic year.
- The exact date(s) will be on invoices. Students on part-time programmes where fees are paid on a modular basis cannot pay fees by instalment.
- Sponsored students: must provide us with valid sponsorship information that covers the period of study.

Law placements
Our law courses all offer optional Professional Training placements.
You could work for the full year, either in the UK or abroad, or spend half the year on a work placement and the other half studying at one of our partner universities in countries such as the Netherlands, Sweden, France, Singapore and Australia.
All students on an LLB Pathway are enrolled on Surrey Law School’s Professional Training Preparation programme during their second year.
Many Professional Training placements are paid, with the opportunity to experience a variety of contexts, including solicitors’ offices, local authority legal departments, nongovernmental organisations and corporations.
Placement opportunities include positions which count towards 'Qualifying Work Experience' for those wishing to qualify as solicitors, and experience of law in practice for those wishing to become barristers.
