Research courses

We have a strong focus on research and our postgraduate research students have access to leading technologies and the opportunity to gain industry experience within our related research centres.

What we are researching

We have a number of research areas within each of the Department's seven research centres and groups.

Find a course

Our students have the opportunity to spend four years in industry via our unique Engineering Doctorate programme.

If you are interested in doing a PhD or EngD with us, please look at the interests of our Department's research groups and get in contact with an academic.

Studentships

We have studentship opportunities available, including our new Vice Chancellor’s Studentship Award and the Doctoral College Studentship Award.

Expert support

The Doctoral College supports the academic and professional development of postgraduate researchers to ensure our world-leading research continues to grow. There is also an extensive Researcher Development Programme run at university level.

Centre for Doctoral Training

We host a prestigious EPSRC funded Centre for Doctoral Training in Micro- and NanoMaterials and Technologies (MiNMaT) which offers the Micro- and NanoMaterials and Technologies EngD course that combines industrially-relevant research with a taught element.

The Centre supports research engineers whilst they are based both at their sponsors organisation and here on campus over their four years.

Facilities

In 2019, the University of Surrey invested over £6.5m in new and upgraded facilitates in the Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences (FEPS). This video explores some of the areas that benefited from this investment, including flexible teaching space with multi-functional display and a preparation area for our Unmanned Aircraft System team.
