As part of a masters module on destination management and marketing, students spent three days in Cardiff learning about the challenges Cardiff faces in promoting itself as an international tourism destination. The students carried out fieldwork in and around Cardiff with the aim of being able to make recommendations on how Cardiff can be made a more attractive and successful tourist destination.

The aim of the field trip is for students to practically apply their understanding of the issues many destinations face in terms of marketing and promotion.

Staying in Cardiff Bay, they had expert guest talks from Claire Haven Tang and Diana James from Cardiff Metropolitan University before carrying out group research projects on the destination marketing issues facing Cardiff.

Of interest to many of the international students on this course was Cardiff’s limited international appeal and how Cardiff’s international appeal and image could be increased. The students interviewed local and international tourists visiting Cardiff, with a view to developing and refining their research skills, helping them with their forthcoming postgraduate dissertations.
