What you will study

Our Petroleum Refining Systems Engineering MSc will equip you with the essential knowledge and skills you’ll need to pursue engineering careers in the oil, gas and petrochemical sectors.

You’ll gain a thorough understanding of oil refining and associated downstream processing technologies, operations and economics; process safety and operations integrity; and methods for the optimal design of process systems. Throughout your studies, you’ll learn about the general economics of the energy sector, oil exploration and production, as well as renewable energy systems.

You’ll also learn more about petroleum refining through our unique work assignments at a virtual oil-refining and chemical company.

The Department of Chemical and Process Engineering offers a wealth of advanced facilities including:

  • £1.7m Fluor pilot plant facility – one of the only fully operational pilot plants at a UK university
  • Analytical, energy and powder labs which have recently undergone a £2.1m investment
  • State-of-the-art research facilities for particle technology, clean energy production and pioneering catalysts and nanoreactors.

Engineers and scientists are increasingly expected to have skills in information systems engineering and decision-support systems alongside their main technical and/or scientific expertise.

As a graduate of this course, you will be well prepared to help oil, gas and petrochemical companies make important decisions in view of vast amounts of information by executing the right operational technologies and approaches.

The University operates a credit framework for all taught programmes based on a 15-credit tariff. Modules can be either 15, 30, 45 or 60, 75 and 120 credits, and additionally for some masters dissertations, 90 credits.

Timetable

Course timetables are normally available one month before the start of the semester. Please note that while we make every effort to ensure that timetables are as student-friendly as possible, scheduled teaching can take place on any day of the week (Monday–Friday). Wednesday afternoons are normally reserved for sports and cultural activities. Entry requirements

A minimum of a 2:1 UK honours degree in either Chemistry, Engineering or Physics, or a recognised equivalent international qualification. We'll also consider relevant work experience if you don't meet these requirements.

Credit transfer

The University of Surrey recognises that many students enter their higher education course with valuable knowledge and skills developed through a range of professional, vocational and community contexts. If this applies to you, a process called recognition of prior learning (RPL) may allow you to enter your course at a point appropriate to your previous learning and experience, or to join the start of a course without the formal entry requirements. This means that you may be exempt from certain elements of study in the course for which you have applied and be awarded credit based on your previous qualifications/experience. There are restrictions on RPL for some courses and fees may be payable for certain claims.
