Choosing Surrey

I came to the University of Surrey as I wanted to start a career in research. After completing a BSc in Economics at the University of Coimbra, an MSc in Economics at Queen Mary University, and working for 18 months at the European institutions, in Brussels, I decided to follow a career in research – and the MRes Economics course at the University of Surrey was the perfect first step!

I choose to study at Surrey for its renowned reputation, its world-leading academics and the excellent reviews that I read from past students - it was definitely the right choice!

My course

The MRes is the first step towards the three-year Economics PhD programme. It provides you with the tools and techniques needed to perform high-quality research.

"Throughout this year, I’ve had the opportunity to learn from people who are specialists in their fields and attend seminars with top academics from other universities. All this made me approach different economic problems in a much more broad-minded way and improved my research abilities. Besides that, I’m a part of a very engaged and lively department."

Surrey’s location

Guildford was a pleasant surprise. It’s a very nice town with many shops, cafes and restaurants, and it’s only a 34-minute train journey to London. It provides you with a great quality of life. In addition to this, if you’re a sports enthusiast like me, there’s Surrey Sports Park which is within walking distance of the University, where you can play and watch many different sports.

If you want to be a researcher in economics, I highly recommend coming to Surrey. The rigorous MRes, combined with the possibility of collaborating with great academics makes the University of Surrey the place to be!
