Hannah

I knew before my placement that I’d love to go into entertainment and during my placement I’ve loved learning so much about - and being a part of - the film industry. Although it is a tough industry to get into, I believe this placement experience has been undeniably beneficial in terms of getting early experience in the business.

Entry year

2023

Describe your placement experience.

My placement experience is at Warner Bros. Discovery, and my role is the Digital Marketing Intern. My main responsibilities include managing the Warner Bros. UK Pinterest, website, and our Meta animation social media accounts. More widely, I help support all the theatrical, catalogue and TV campaigns for Warner Bros.

I love creating articles for the website and social content for the social media platforms as I get to (mostly) have creative freedom with the type of content I get to post.

The job is hybrid where I work from home and commute to the London office every week.

What are the best things about it?

It has been an amazing opportunity to be part of such an exciting industry and company and one I will never take for granted. To have worked on titles such as Weapons, Superman, The Conjuring: Last Rites and especially "Wuthering Heights", has been unforgettable and truly informative of the processes behind the entire life cycle of a film from script to home entertainment stage.

Have your career plans been informed by your placement?

Absolutely, I knew before my placement that I’d love to go into entertainment and during my placement I’ve loved learning so much about - and being a part of - the film industry. I hope to stay in the entertainment industry after university and although it is a tough industry to get into, I believe this placement experience has been undeniably beneficial in terms of getting early experience in the business and understanding what specific areas I’d like to go into.

What advice do you have for students on considering doing a placement?

Apply early if you can – don’t leave it to last minute as you may get overwhelmed with applications alongside coursework and it can feel like a weight off your shoulders the earlier you apply.

In the interview process be honest and show you're enthusiastic – interviewers will want to see genuine enthusiasm for the role/company you’re applying to.

As important as it is to display how your past experience and skills would make you the ideal candidate for the role, these skills can be taught and refined on the job too. It is equally as important to show the interviewer that you genuinely want to be there, not just for first impressions but remember this placement is for your benefit as well, and this enthusiasm should be natural if you’re applying to a position you’d enjoy working in for a year.

Don’t assume you can’t apply somewhere based on the degree you chose, I applied for a marketing role at Warner Bros. on an English Literature degree and little prior experience in a marketing environment and was offered the job. Your degree is valuable and versatile for the skills you develop from it, and many companies won’t discount you depending on what you have chosen to study but in fact will often appreciate a range of degrees due to what each of them offers.
