"The placement support provided by the course has made it much easier to find relevant opportunities and events, helping me gain experience that is useful beyond university."

What do you like about your course and why?

What I like most about my course is how well it supports both academic development and practical experience. The placement support provided by the course has made it much easier to find relevant opportunities and events, helping me gain experience that is useful beyond university.

I also really value the 24/7 access to the computer labs, which helped me become more comfortable working with Linux, a new operating system for me. Having constant access to these facilities allowed me to practise independently and build confidence in my technical skills.

"The structure of the first year was especially helpful, as it ensured everyone was up to speed while also helping students adjust to university life and academic expectations. In addition, having opportunities to work in groups and collaborate with others has helped me develop skills that I can apply outside of university and discuss in interviews."

What do you enjoy most about Surrey?

What I enjoy most about Surrey is the opportunity to live independently and meet people I genuinely connect with. The campus has a welcoming atmosphere, and through campus life and societies, I’ve been able to build meaningful friendships. In fact, I met some of my closest friends through the societies the university offers.

I also love how beautiful the campus is and the balance it provides between being urban and rural. There are plenty of shops, cafés, and places to go with friends nearby, while the campus itself has lots of green space, which creates a relaxed and enjoyable environment to live and study in.

What do you want to do when you graduate?

I don’t have a fixed plan yet, but I would like to pursue a career in Computer Science. I have a strong interest in areas such as game development and web development, but I’m also open to exploring different fields within technology to find what suits me best. I’m keen to continue learning and gaining experience across a range of roles before deciding on a specific path.

Your advice to new students

I would advise students to be comfortable taking things at a slower pace in the first year. The course is designed to help you thrive academically while also supporting your personal growth. University is often the first time many people live away from home, and for some, it may even be their first time living in a new country, so it’s completely okay to take time to adjust.

I would also encourage students to enjoy the experience, get to know different people, and figure out the kind of environment and routine that works best for them. It’s important to remember that it’s okay not to have everything figured out straight away. Many big decisions are made at a young age, and it’s perfectly fine if your goals change over time or aren’t set in stone.
