What do you like about your course and why?
I’ve enjoyed how wide-ranging Computer Science is at Surrey, because it goes far beyond coding to cover real-world applications across areas like cybersecurity, data, networks and software engineering. The course consistently challenges you to think logically and solve problems in a structured way, which has strengthened both my technical ability and confidence. I also value that the degree is professionally aligned and supports recognised standards, helping students build a strong foundation for careers in the sector. Overall, it has pushed me to develop as a well-rounded problem solver, not just a programmer.
What do you enjoy most about Surrey?
What I’ve enjoyed most about Surrey is the sense of growth you feel over time - academically, professionally and personally.
As I’ve progressed through my degree, I’ve benefitted from learning alongside knowledgeable staff and meeting motivated students who share similar goals.
The campus experience has also played a big part in my journey, helping me become more independent and confident. I also appreciate the environment around campus - the green spaces, the history and the community feel make it a great place to study and live.
Describe your placement experience
Before starting at the University of Surrey, I completed a 12-month programme with IBM in London within their Technology division. That experience was genuinely formative and helped shape how I approached university - especially in terms of professionalism, communication and long-term career goals. During the programme, I worked on projects that developed my technical and analytical skills, including building a Salesforce dashboard to review performance metrics and collaborating with different teams and stakeholders. Highlights also included travel for project work, exposure to applied AI use cases, and learning how to manage a full-time work schedule while developing my confidence and network.
What do you want to do when you graduate?
After graduating, I plan to pursue postgraduate study focused on mathematics and statistics, particularly in areas linked to stochastic processes and quantitative modelling. I’m interested in how data-driven methods can be used to build robust models and metrics for investment decision-making. Professionally, I want to develop a career in finance where I can apply analytical thinking and technical skills in a high-performance environment. Long term, my ambition is to progress towards portfolio management.
Do you have any advice for students interested in this choosing this course?
Make the most of the people and resources around you. Surrey has lecturers and module leaders who are genuinely passionate about their subjects, and engaging with their guidance makes a real difference.
Attend your scheduled teaching consistently, because Computer Science builds quickly and staying on top of concepts week-by-week helps you avoid falling behind later. Try to treat formative assessments and weekly practice as part of your routine, as they build confidence and exam readiness over time. Finally, enjoy the wider university experience too—societies, events and meeting new people are a great way to grow your network and make your time at Surrey memorable.
