This is a research council funded studentship. The studentship covers the University tuition fees (in the EU/UK) and provides an annual tax-free stipend for UK students (rate for 2019-2020 is £14,777 p.a. tax-free).

Applications are invited for a fully funded PhD studentship within the Experimental Nuclear Physics Group at the University of Surrey.
The funding is for a three-year research programme leading to the degree of PhD. The project will focus on experimental investigations for key topics in both nuclear structure and explosive astrophysical environments. The experimental work will take place mainly at leading international heavy-ion accelerator facilities including Argonne National Laboratory (Chicago) and GSI (Germany) and will utilise a variety of state-of-the-art detector systems for both charged-particle and gamma-ray spectroscopy.

A first class or upper second honours degree (or equivalent overseas qualification) in an appropriate discipline (e.g physics or mathematics and physics).
You should be able to demonstrate excellent mathematical, analytic, programming skills. Some previous experience with radiation detector systems, experience with C/C++ programming and in performing Monte-Carlo simulations would be advantageous but is not essential.
IELTS Academic: 6.5 or above (or equivalent) with 6.0 in each individual category.
