'Reach for the stars' BBC Presenter tells women ahead of International Women's Day
On Monday 3 March, the University of Surrey will host the latest ‘Jim meets…’ interviews, with special guest Dr Maggie Aderin-Pocock, presenter of the BBC’s ‘Sky at Night’ series.
In conversation with Professor of Physics and BBC broadcaster Jim Al-Khalili, Maggie will share her experiences of being a leading female scientist in a male-dominated environment.
With a career spanning space, star-gazing and satellites, she has been awarded an MBE for her contribution to science communication, engaging audiences all over the world with the wonders of space science.
“As a child I was told my dreams of space were unreachable. Now as a space scientist, I have proved having a dream really can pay off, launching satellites, researching the hearts of stars and now the honour of presenting ‘The Sky at Night,’ said Dr Maggie Aderin-Pocock.
“Science is a wonderful career and it’s a tragedy that only 13% of science-related jobs are held by women. I want to show that anything is possible regardless of gender, and to inspire everyone to reach for their dreams – no matter how far away they seem.”
The event is being held in support of International Women’s Day, a day of recognition that aims to inspire women and celebrate their achievements
“Maggie’s passion for science is infectious. With a ground-breaking career in space, her skills in bringing space and science to life are inspirational,” said Professor Jim Al Khalili.
“I am delighted to welcome such a fascinating speaker to the ‘Jim meets…’ hot seat. In celebrating her achievements, I hope we can inspire the next generation of female scientists.”
The ‘Jim Meets…’ series at the University of Surrey has been running for the past three years. Previous guest speakers have included Sir David Attenborough, Professor Brian Cox, Dara Ó Briain and the Archbishop of Canterbury, Dr Rowan Williams.
