Inside Surrey societies: ChemEng Society

Joining a society linked to your subject is a fantastic way of gaining access to a range of events, making new friends and enriching your university experience. We talk to Victoria Chan, President of ChemEng Society, to go inside the Society and find out what’s on offer.

Primarily a social society designed to enable students to meet people from across the year groups and have fun, ChemEng Soc puts on regular socials and is open to all. Social events have recently included a meet-and-greet, games nights, a Halloween-themed movie night, and a Christmas dinner at Bill’s in Guildford.

A major event ChemEng Soc gets involved in is the annual Frank Morton sports day (named after a prominent professor of chemical engineering) which brings together chemical engineering students from universities across the UK for a unique event.

President Victoria Chan says: “I organised Surrey’s trip to the Frank Morton event in February 2022 which was held at Newcastle – in fact the experience of organising the trip was what inspired me to get more involved with the Society.”

ChemEng Soc also provides the opportunity to get active closer to home: Vice-President Okeny Odong runs a mixed football team which plays against other football teams in the university league.

Asked why students should join ChemEng Soc, Victoria says: “Studying chemical engineering can be challenging at times, and people sometimes feel that they’re struggling on their own. Coming to society events enables you to make friends and share your experiences, and that’s a great way of reducing stress. Big events like our Christmas dinner, which include academics as well as students, allow you to get to know your lecturers as people.”

Third year student and Society member Tarique Miah says:

"ChemEng Soc events have provided me with an easy avenue to meet new people. The Meet and Greet earlier this semester allowed me to socialise with other year groups and work together on different activities. Earlier this year, I also went on the Frank Morton trip to Newcastle which was a great opportunity to network through meeting chemical engineering students from all over the country." - Tarique Miah
