University of Surrey statement on the conflict in Ukraine

The unfolding events in Ukraine, and the growing humanitarian crisis, have shocked and saddened the University of Surrey community. The decision by the Putin regime to invade Ukraine and the consequences being witnessed are deplorable and reprehensible. We share the outrage being expressed around the world.

The University has made it clear that it stands on the side of peace and reconciliation and holds dear the principles of freedom, democracy and self-determination. These values are fundamental for academic freedom and collaboration. A vigil for peace has been held at the University, organised by the Students’ Union in support of those affected by the crisis.

Wellbeing support continues to be available for any member of staff or student affected, and the University has actively reached out and offered support to members of our community from Ukraine and Russia.

We continue to hope for a swift and peaceful conclusion.
