Biography
As Senior Vice-President Greg works across the institution as a senior representative and ambassador. He acts as a champion for engagement and takes Executive Board responsibility for the University’s relationships with Alumni and Donors as well as civic and civil society (with particular focus on the local community). Greg is a member of the University’s Council.
The strategic thread of the function is around building the University’s engagement with civil and civic society and lifting the University’s reputation as an anchor institution, delivering impact, growth and social benefit locally as well as nationally. The Blackwell Park Development and the Advancement function are integral to the role, as is sponsoring of key strategic projects such as the Learning Hotel.
Greg has a commercial background, joining the University of Surrey from the private sector in 2002.He has worked in the banking, electricity, telecommunications and satellite industries in South Africa, UK and mainland Europe and has an MBA from Henley Business School.
Greg moved to the UK in 1989 and spent five years with South Wales Electricity, working on privatisation, treasury management, project finance and mergers and acquisitions.
In the mid-nineties Greg moved to Guildford as Managing Director in the start-up Cable Communications venture CableTel Surrey and Hampshire Limited. The company experienced a growth rate of around 10 per cent per month for the period of his leadership.
Greg then worked in mainland Europe in the satellite industry before joining the University, where he has delivered business efficiency initiatives, many large-scale capital programmes, the sale of spinout company SSTL, the formation of Surrey Sports Park and the strategic alliance with the National Physical Laboratory.
