About
Biography
I started in my role as Forensic Lecturer at the University of Surrey in 2024. Prior to this I worked for Surrey Police in a multitude of roles within their Forensic Investigation Department (2006-2024).
The majority of my time with Surrey Police was spent as a Crime Scene Investigator where I handled complex and challenging cases, collected and documented physical evidence and produced detailed reports and testimonies. I acted as the lead forensic investigator at scenes of sexual assaults, violent assaults, fires, major, serious and complex incidents such as murders and unexplained deaths including post-mortems. I have also attended both crown and magistrates courts to give evidence as an expert witness.
With the implementation of the national ISO standardisation that came into practice in recent years, the face of Forensic Investigation within Policing has completely changed. During this time I took on a secondary skill as an internal auditor. Today this enables me to reflect on correct working practices and enables me to prepare students for work beyond university.
During my time with Surrey Police I also worked within the Forensic Recovery Laboratory using a number of chemical techniques to develop fingerprints on crime scene exhibits and blood searching on clothing. I have a good working knowledge of forensic laboratory procedures in both wet fingerprint labs and DNA-clean environments.
And finally, I spent some time as an office based Forensic Intelligence Officer where I interpreted data to establish forensic links between crime scenes, to in turn, advise the Surrey Police Tasking department on the likelihood of crime trends.
I have very much enjoyed my transition into academia and I am passionate about sharing my knowledge and skills with the next generation of forensic investigators.
