About
Biography
After graduating from veterinary school at the University of Liverpool, Dr Nicola Parry spent several years working in mixed general practice in the United Kingdom before moving to the United States to pursue residency training and board certification in anatomic pathology by the American College of Veterinary Pathologists (ACVP). Her career has predominantly centered on academia, including serving as Chief of Pathology in the Division of Comparative Medicine at Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Head of Pathology at Tufts University Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine. After almost 22 years working in the United States, Dr Parry returned to the UK in April 2021 to join the School of Veterinary Medicine here at the University of Surrey.
As Head of Pathology, one of her key missions is to ensure timely and accurate reporting of diagnostic submissions by the Veterinary Pathology Centre. She especially enjoys working with veterinarians from other specialty areas to facilitate this, because of the central role that pathology plays in supporting patient care. Improving the efficiency and effectiveness of the diagnostic service also contributes to another key mission of teaching veterinary students, by providing an important source of educational case-based materials.
Throughout her career, Dr Parry’s research collaborations have focused on studies that advance the One Health concept. These include investigations of inflammation-driven cancer (for example, by using Helicobacter species in mice as models of human infectious gastritis, hepatitis, inflammatory bowel disease, and gastrointestinal cancers) and zoonotic bacterial diseases. She also enjoys collaborating with other clinicians on clinical research studies.
Dr Parry is an active member of many professional organisations. She has been awarded Fellowship by the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (by Meritorious Contributions to the Profession) and has served on various professional society committees since 2005. In particular, she holds positions on the ACVP’s Board of Directors and on the Test Item Writers Group and Test Item Editors Group (Examination Committee groups). She also currently serves as Chair of the American Veterinary Medical Association’s Council on Education Selection Committee. She has continually served in different capacities on the ACVP Examination Committee since 2006.
