"I love how much there is to get involved with at Surrey and how nice the atmosphere is on campus. This year, I am part of the Formula Student team, the University Choir, and the Physics society."
What do you like about your course and why?
What I like most about the Physics with Astronomy course is how it combines different areas of physics while still letting me focus on my passion for astrophysics. I’ve always been really interested in both astronomy and quantum physics, so I like having modules that cover those topics, but also ones that help me understand the bigger picture of how everything fits together in more numerical and thermodynamics based modules. The mix of in-lecture content, coursework and coding keeps things interesting, and the lecturers are great at explaining the content in each module. It’s a challenging course, but also extremely rewarding.
What do you enjoy most about Surrey?
I love how much there is to get involved with at Surrey and how nice the atmosphere is on campus. This year, I am part of the Formula Student team, the University Choir, and Physoc, the Physics society, where I’m the advertisement manager. All of these have helped me meet loads of people and try new things outside of lectures.
I also really like how easy it is to find good places to study or relax, whether that’s working in one of the cafés, by the lake, or in the library all year round. It has enabled me to have a really good balance between my social life and the societies I am in, as well as studying.
What do you want to do when you graduate?
I’m not completely sure what I want to do yet, but I’ve been exploring different options through my course. I’ve attended all the CV and careers events hosted by Surrey in both first and second year so far, and they’ve helped me discover areas I hadn’t really considered before, like working in the nuclear sector.
"I originally chose Surrey because I’ve always loved astrophysics but also wanted the flexibility to explore other areas of physics, which this course allows."
I’m also planning to switch from the BSc to the MPhys in Physics with Astronomy, as I’d like to continue developing my skills with a research year and keep my options open.
What advice would you give to students thinking of studying your course?
I’d tell anyone thinking about studying Physics with Astronomy to go for it. It can be challenging at times, but it’s worth it when you see how everything fits together. My advice would be to try and keep up with lectures and ask for help when you need it, all the lecturers are friendly and open to questions after lectures or via email. Also, getting involved with societies like Physoc also helps you make friends both in and outside of your course and helps you feel a part of the Surrey community.
