"What I enjoyed most about the foundation year was the people. The staff I met during the foundation year were incredibly supportive and welcoming, which made it easier to settle into life at university."

Why did you choose to do a foundation year?

I chose to do a foundation year because I didn’t meet the entry requirements for the undergraduate degree. Instead of seeing this as the end of the road, I saw it as an opportunity to develop my knowledge, build confidence and prepare myself for studying economics at university level.

What did you enjoy about it?

What I enjoyed most about the foundation year was the people. The staff I met during the foundation year were incredibly supportive and welcoming, which made it easier to settle into life at university. They were always approachable, creating an environment where I would feel comfortable asking questions and building my confidence.

What support have you received at Surrey?

Throughout my time at Surrey, I have received both academic and personal support. One of the biggest sources of support was the teaching staff. They were always approachable, and their office hours gave me the opportunity to discuss a range of topics, whether I needed help understanding course content, feedback on assignments or guidance on my progress.

How has your foundation year had an impact on you?

The foundation year gave me the confidence and belief that I could succeed at university. It provided me with the essential skills needed to help me progress through the programme.

During the foundation year I was able to develop effective study habits, improve time management and discover revision and learning techniques that worked well for me. These skills became even more important as the academic demands increased in the later years of my degree and played a key part in helping me to succeed.

The foundation year also helped me settle into university life. I built friendships that will last a lifetime and became more involved in the student community by attending many events, and joining clubs and societies. Looking back, these things were influential for my success, both on an academic and personal level and played an important part in helping graduate with a First Class Honours.

What advice do you have for students thinking of doing a foundation year?

My advice would be to make the most of every opportunity that the foundation year offers. Do not be afraid to ask questions, seek support from your lecturers and make use of the resources that are available to you. Everyone is here to help you succeed not just during the foundation year but throughout the entire programme.
