Course
Human Resources Management MSc
Entry year
2018

"Starting my journey with Surrey at Undergraduate level helped me grow into a better person with the right skills and knowledge required for my future career path. From the first day at University up until graduation, Surrey has always been there to support me.

My undergraduate and postgraduate degree both involved different aspects of business. I studied BSc International Events Management and soon developed an interest in Human Resources. I then decided to pursue my master’s degree in MSc Human Resources Management at Surrey Business School.

The course is tailored to personal module choices which meant I could handpick modules based on my interests. Many universities do not include a placement at postgraduate level, and this was one of the main reasons I was attracted to the course. Work experience is very valuable in the modern market as it makes an individual stand out.

The Human Resources Management MSc is accredited by the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development, which opens many doors for those who have chosen to do the programme as it is requested by many employers in the HR industry.

One of the best things about my programme is that there are many workshops and networking events with top HR leaders which allowed me to expand my knowledge of the HR industry and equip myself with the skills that employers look for.

A valuable skill that I have learnt is strengthening my critical thinking. Throughout my time at Surrey I used critical thinking to analyse information and reach a solution, this is vital in the HR industry and was used in my placement at BaxterStorey, when I shadowed a senior employee working on an investigation.

My course will have a big impact on my career and has equipped me with the skills, knowledge and experience I need for employment. The placement option allowed me to better understand how HR works in an organisation and exposed me to the typical daily tasks within HR. I was also able to visit and get a better insight of other companies such as Visa, Goldman Sachs and State Street, all clients of BaxterStorey.

I believe work experience is very valuable as it allows you to put the knowledge you have gained during your course to practice. My placement allowed me to meet a variety of people in sites across the UK and I was also able to better understand the roles and responsibilities of my colleagues.

My happiest memory at Surrey was when I succeeded in finding the first placement amongst the Postgraduate students. Networking is important at University and I was able to use my network to help me secure my placement at BaxterStorey. My advice for a future student would be to network as much as you can through events offered by the University and get involved with all the activities available!"
