Free onsite tests for 'symptomatic' students and staff

Students and staff who are experiencing symptoms of Covid-19 (however mild), can access a free Covid-19 test through our Rapid Response team and local testing facilities.

Report if you have symptoms, or you have been contact traced and told to self-isolate, or if you’re arriving from a non- exempt country.

Rapid Response team

Our Rapid Response team are able to advise, support your self-isolation, assist with scheduling a free test and let you know how and when you can return to campus safely after isolation.

Symptomatic testing and contact tracing helps to keep our community safe, by reducing the risks of transmission. The Rapid Response team is a key part of this.

You should self-isolate immediately and contact the Rapid Response team if you:

  • develop symptoms (high temp/new continuous cough/loss of taste or smell), no matter how mild
  • receive a positive Covid-19 test result
  • have been contact traced and told to self-isolate
  • are required to isolate due to arriving from a non-exempt country or a high-risk area.

Please note: At present, tests are only available for those with symptoms. If you are identified as a close contact, you are legally required to self-isolate. If you develop symptoms you can obtain a test.

The Rapid Response team will contact you within 24 hours to make sure you’re ok and ensure you have the support you need.

If you have requested a test, the Rapid Response team will advise you on the quickest and safest way to get a test. You must remain in self-isolation (apart from going to receive a test) until a result is received. This is a legal requirement and you may be subject to a fine if breached.

  • We will book you a test as quickly as possible: you will either be offered a test slot for one of the University’s rapid tests on campus or you will be advised to attend the NHS walk-through test site next to GSA or book a test at your local NHS testing site depending on what we believe will be faster or safer for you to access.
  • If we book you a University rapid test, you will be directed to one of the two mobile sites based on Manor Park or Stag Hill for your test.
  • We aim to get the results to you within 24 hours.

The Rapid Response team will let you know how and when you can return to campus safely after self-isolating. They’ll also identify who else is in your household as they will also be required to self-isolate for 10 days. Public Health officials may then get in touch to identify any other “close contacts” who live outside of your household.

If your test is positive, you are legally required to continue your self-isolation for at least 10 days.

If you test positive for Covid-19:

  1. The Rapid Response team will work with you to identify any ‘close’ contacts in line with PHE advice and guidance. 
  2. The University will also notify those individuals that you have been in close contact with on campus.
  3. Those who you’ve been in close contact with will be required to self-isolate, to prevent the potential of passing on the infection.

If you receive a positive result, you’ll need to remain self-isolated for at least 10 days from the day your symptoms started. Anybody you live with, or anyone in your support bubble, must also self-isolate for 10 days. More information is available on the NHS webpages.

 

A ‘close contact’ is a someone who has been close to a person who has tested positive for Covid-19 anytime from 2 days before the person was symptomatic up to 10 days from onset of symptoms (this is when they are infectious to others). For example, a contact may be:

  • People who spent significant time in the same household as a someone who has tested positive for Covid-19
  • Sexual partners
  • A person who has had face-to-face contact (within one metre) with someone who has tested positive for Covid-19
  • A person who has been within 2 metres of someone who has tested positive for Covid-19 for more than 15 minutes
  • A person who has travelled in a vehicle or plane with someone who has tested positive for Covid-19

Yes. If contacted by NHS test and trace, you must report this to the Rapid Response team by completing the reporting form.

You must self-isolate for 10 days and notify the Rapid Response team by completing the online form.

If you are a student who is self-isolating and develops symptoms, you should notify the Rapid Response team and you will be offered an onsite test. If you do not have symptoms you are not eligible for an NHS test.

A negative test does not release individuals from the obligation to self-isolate.

In line with government requirements, all students and PGRs are required to book an asymptomatic Covid-19 test when they return to campus. Staff who need to be on campus are also encouraged to book a test. 

The asymptomatic testing facility at Surrey Sports Park will remain open as planned throughout January and February, and in the coming weeks we will add more dates to enable everyone to be tested before their Semester 2 face-to-face teaching begins. In exceptional circumstances, we may also offer asymptomatic testing for individuals who are deemed at higher risk or in a high risk area. This approach will enable us to identify positive cases of Covid-19 and act accordingly to break the chain of transmission and contain an outbreak. In these circumstances you will be invited by the Rapid Response team to take a test.  

Please notify the Rapid Response team that you have developed symptoms and are self-isolating by completing the reporting form.

The team will be in touch to give you advise, but if you do not live on or near campus, it is likely that they will recommend you book an NHS test at a location near your home or order an NHS home-test kit, as that will be safer.

    You must pre-book a test in advance through the NHS. You can book the NHS option that best suits you via the NHS App, NHS website or calling NHS 119.

    The walk-through Local Testing Site next to GSA is open to students, staff and the local community. To access a test at this location you should select “I don’t have access to a car” and then search using “GU2 7XH”.

    If you have access to a vehicle, you can book a test at a drive-through Regional Testing Site. There is a drive-through testing site at Onslow Park and Ride, next to Surrey Sports Park.

    • NHS h​​​​ome-test kit

    If you do not live on or near to campus, it may be safer to book a test at a location close to your home, or you can order an NHS home-test kit to be delivered to your door, returning your test using a priority postbox.
