Overview
Professor Philip James will talk about the observational evidence for bars having a controlling influence on the star formation properties of their host galaxies. How strong are the effects, what types of galaxies are affected, what are the evolutionary time scales of bar-driven processes, and can analysis of associated stellar populations be used to constrain bar lifetimes?
His approach will be largely observational, but he will also present some initial results from a comparison with numerical simulations of barred galaxies.
