Three-scale singular limits

Speaker: Steve Schochet (Tel Aviv University)

Abstract:

Singular limits of evolutionary partial differential equations containing two small parameters that tend to zero at different rates exhibit new phenomena not found in classical two-scale singular limits. General uniform existence and convergence theorems will be presented for such systems under appropriate assumptions, along with a variety of illuminating examples. A result on the rate of convergence for a particular system of MHD equations will also be presented.

Most of these results are joint work with Bin Cheng and Qiangchang Ju, and some are joint work with Xin Xu.

No previous knowledge of singular limits for partial differential equations will be assumed.
