Abstract

Black holes are some of the strangest objects in the universe. Initially purely theoretical concepts in the early 20th century, their existence has been observed in numerous ways, most recently via gravitational wave experiments and by observing the stars at the centre of our galaxy. I will describe how our understanding of black holes has changed over the last 100 years, and illustrate some of their key properties, including how they must play a key role in the construction of a quantum theory of gravity.
