Abstract

In recent years there have been many headlines describing a ‘mental health crisis’ amongst doctoral researchers – but what was the research supporting these claims? With funding from the Office for Students, we launched the U-DOC project. The overall aim of U-DOC was the better understand the mental health status, as well as the protective and risk factors associated with poor and good mental health. We used a mixed methods approach to conduct the largest online survey of DRs ever conducted and the first of its kind in the UK. In this talk, I will present the findings from the U-DOC project, consider the implications of this work, and discuss our next steps.
