Improving health and wellbeing for all
Improving health and wellbeing for all advances sustainable health and wellbeing: equity, resilience and planetary care, through inclusive, sustainable, and evidence-based approaches, focusing on under-served communities and systemic change. Our work spans environmental, social, and behavioural determinants of health, aiming for impact that supports both people, animals and the planet.
About our research
Health and Wellbeing for All is a research programme committed to improving human health and wellbeing through sustainable, inclusive, and evidence-based approaches—particularly for communities that are under-served, marginalised, or disproportionately affected by health inequities. Recognising that health is shaped by environmental, social, and systemic factors, the programme draws on expertise across the Institute for Sustainability in areas such as air and water quality, nutrition, nature-based interventions, governance, and behaviour change. We focus on delivering real-world impact through applied, community-engaged research that enhances health equity, builds resilience, and addresses both immediate health needs and their structural causes in the UK and low- and middle-income countries.
A core focus is ensuring that efforts to improve health are themselves environmentally sustainable. The programme explores how healthcare systems and interventions can reduce their environmental footprint while maintaining high-quality care—through low-carbon infrastructure, sustainable procurement, and circular approaches to health service delivery. We support the transition to climate-resilient, environmentally responsible health systems that are responsive to both local needs and planetary boundaries. Through participatory design, social inclusion, and intersectoral collaboration, we aim to co-create healthier, more equitable futures where all individuals can thrive physically, mentally, and socially—within the limits of a sustainable world.
Thematic areas
- Health equity and inclusion in under-served communities: Addressing health inequalities through participatory, community-led research that supports culturally relevant, accessible, and socially inclusive approaches to physical, mental, and social wellbeing.
- Climate change, environment, and health: Investigating the direct and indirect impacts of climate change and environmental degradation—such as air and water pollution, heat, and biodiversity loss—on human health, and identifying adaptation strategies.
- Sustainable and resilient health systems: Exploring how health and care systems can reduce their environmental impact and build resilience—through circular procurement, low-carbon infrastructure, nature-based solutions, and sustainability-informed policy.
- Technology for preventive and long-term health: Developing and evaluating digital, diagnostic, and data-driven innovations that support early intervention, preventive care, chronic disease management, and equitable health access.
- Healthy living environments and behavioural change: Promoting healthier lifestyles through sustainable urban design, access to green space, active transport, improved air and water quality, and behaviour change interventions rooted in local contexts.
