Expert comment - Electric car infrastructure creaking under demand

Dr Yinglong He, Lecturer in Resilient Transport Systems, Electric Vehicles, and Autonomous Systems at the University of Surrey, shares his views on the Electric car infrastructure creaking under demand.

"It is evident that the increasing demand for electric vehicles (EVs) in the UK is putting a strain on the existing electric car infrastructure. While investing in infrastructure is critical, these quick wins can help ease the burden on the current system.

"A comprehensive approach that combines funding, innovation, and awareness will be crucial in ensuring a smooth transition to an electric future.

"Firstly, we need to expand and upgrade the charging infrastructure. We can do this by collaborating with private sector companies and the government can expedite the installation of charging points across the country by streamlining the approval process, providing incentives for businesses and homeowners to install charging points, and establishing partnerships with charging network operators for widespread coverage. Simultaneously, investment should be made to upgrade existing infrastructure, including increasing charging capacity, improving reliability, and implementing smart charging solutions to optimize resource usage.

"Secondly, we need to encourage innovation. The UK should support research and development efforts focused on developing new technologies and solutions for EV charging. This could involve funding initiatives focused on wireless charging, ultra-fast charging, vehicle-to-grid (V2G) integration, and the development of next-generation batteries with higher energy density, such as lithium-air and lithium-silicon batteries. These investments would have a substantial impact on enhancing the charging experience for EV owners and alleviating range anxiety.

"Lastly, we need to put emphasis on education and awareness. Public awareness campaigns can play a vital role in encouraging the adoption of EVs and educating people about the available charging infrastructure. By providing accurate information on charging options, benefits, and the overall sustainability of electric vehicles, more consumers can make informed decisions."
