First badminton competition held by the University of Surrey Shanghai Alumni Association
The Shanghai Alumni Association recently held its inaugural badminton tournament, bringing together Surrey graduates for a fun sporting challenge.
On August 22, 2020, the University of Surrey Shanghai Alumni Association held its first badminton competition, which was attended by graduates from a wide range of majors and graduating classes. Organized by Wu Ning (MBA, 2003), President of Association, the event took place at Jing 'an District Gymnasium, one of the city’s top venues for the sport of badminton.
Dr Zhang Jianyi (PhD Chemical and Process Engineering, 2018) used to enjoy playing badminton during his time as a Surrey student. He shared his experiences and supported the competition by explaining the equipment, rules and skills of the game with the alumni players, so that they could quickly master a basic knowledge of the sport.
Meanwhile, to keep everyone’s energy levels up, Li Hong (MSc Occupational and Organisational Psychology, 2017) kindly sponsored Swiss milkshakes through her business, which helped the players recover quickly after their sporting exertions!
The badminton session provided a great opportunity for Surrey alumni to interact, compete and cooperate with each other. The theme of the activity was “competition comes after friendship”. Combining sharing and interaction, sports and leisure, and integrating competition with communication, the tournament embodied the spirit of the cultural and sporting activities that are organised by the University of Surrey Shanghai Alumni Association.
For decades, Chinese students have been an important community at University of Surrey and at present, the University has over 600 alumni in Shanghai.
