Narratives on the Line: Nationalism and Imperialism in Nineteenth-Century Railway Literature
My thesis examines how literature responding to and interested in the developing railway network created and projected ideas of nationalism and imperialism. By interrogating works of journalism, poetry and fiction, my thesis explores identities the motif of the railway produced across nineteenth-century literatures.
