My research project
Hitchhiking Travel in China: Gender, Power and BodiesHitchhiking travel has been largely excluded from tourism research regardless of its association with backpacking and its (re)emergence as a tourist practice especially in contemporary China. This research is to explore this understudied subject. It has a particular focus on gender, as research has shown that gender is an important aspect in hitchhiking, particularly in regard to the ease and risk. By drawing upon a wide range of feminist and queer theories it aim at obtaining understanding of the interplay of power, gender, and the (sexed/sexualised) body in hitchhiking travel in contemporary.
