Surrey's links with industry and emphasis on employability also make it an ideal place to develop the skills and experience needed for a career in events management.

Why did you choose to study your course at Surrey?

I chose to study my course at Surrey because of its strong reputation in hospitality, tourism and events education (being ranked 3rd globally), as well as its industry-focused approach to learning. The International Events Management programme offers an excellent balance of academic theory and practical application, which will definitely support my transition from professional services into the events sector.

Surrey's links with industry and emphasis on employability also make it an ideal place to develop the skills and experience needed for a career in events management.

What are the best things about Surrey and your course?

The best things about Surrey are its welcoming campus community, strong industry connections and reputation for graduate employability. For my course, I particularly value the combination of academic study and practical industry insight, as well as the opportunity to learn from experienced professionals and collaborate with students from a range of backgrounds and countries.

It's also not all theoretical, with one module actually requiring an event to be planned, executed and reflected upon!

What are the best things about life here as a postgraduate student?

One of the best things about postgraduate life at Surrey is the opportunity to study alongside people from a wide range of professional and cultural backgrounds, which creates an engaging learning environment.

The postgraduate community is supportive and independent, while the University's facilities, societies and proximity to London provide plenty of opportunities both academically and socially.

What are your career plans?

My long-term goal is to build a career in event management, with a particular interest in major sporting and international events. I have recently established my own events company and have secured a role with Festival Republic this summer, which I hope will provide valuable industry experience and lead to further career opportunities.

Through this course, I aim to develop the strategic, operational and leadership skills needed to grow within the sector and contribute to the successful delivery of high-quality events.

What advice do you have for students thinking of doing this course?

In short - do it!

My advice would be to make the most of every opportunity the course offers, both inside and outside the classroom. Gaining practical experience through volunteering, part-time work or placements alongside your studies can be just as valuable as the academic content.

I'd also encourage students from non-events backgrounds not to be put off. I worked as a corporate tax advisor for five years before deciding to make a career change and pursue this masters degree, and the course provides an excellent environment to build knowledge, develop new skills and learn from people with a wide range of experiences.
