St Thomas’ Hospital, London"The thing that strikes you about Surrey straight away is the positive and welcoming atmosphere; it feels like a big community. The campus is set within beautiful grounds which stood out for me when looking around the university.
There are a lot of places to socialise with friends. I really enjoy this Psychology course because it covers all the sub-disciplines. The skills you learn are valuable for being a psychologist, but they are also transferrable to different working and life environments.
The lecturers are all active researchers and they are passionate about their specialist fields. This really makes you want to discover what your area of interest is. We have a lot of contact time with them and they are really approachable and supportive.
I also like the different types of assignments there are from essays to lab reports and presentations to group work. The lecturers give you lots of continuous useful feedback and they will put a lot of effort in to supporting and advising you with your studies, helping you to succeed.
A highlight of the course has been my Professional Training placement year. The department has many contacts with leading organisations in Psychology.
I worked in the South Thames Cleft Service at St Thomas’ Hospital, London, helping to run support groups, conduct research and initial assessments, as well as observing therapy sessions with children born with cleft lip/palate who face anxiety and self-esteem difficulties.
"The placement year has improved my communication skills and I feel I have returned to university a lot more confident as I have developed both personally and professionally."
I was able to apply what I learnt in the first two years of my studies and gain contacts within the industry. I definitely wish to pursue a career in clinical psychology so gaining that experience was really important.
Becoming a clinical Psychologist is really competitive but I think coming to the University of Surrey really boosts your chance of exceeding in that field.
The course is accredited by the British Psychological Society and we have the advantage of a year’s professional placement.
There is a wonderful atmosphere throughout the university and the psychology department offers you many inspiring and challenging opportunities."
