International Business Management BSc (Hons)Entry year
2018"The University of Surrey captured my attention from the first visit in many ways and I knew I could picture myself here. The placement year is important to me because in America there is not the opportunity to sandwich a year during your degree to gain vital work experience before graduation. As a dual citizen, I wanted to explore and become immersed in the culture of my second home, and Surrey is the perfect place to welcome international students.
For the first time in my life I have made friendships from all over the world and upon meeting new friends it’s not about asking what state they are from, I ask “what country are you from?” Everyone is very friendly, and I have even met 2nd and 3rd-year students who are happy to offer advice to new students.
I strongly urge all prospective students to attend an Open Day or an Applicant Day, as this gives insight into the course content as well as the chance to explore the beautiful campus and town. Guildford is a charming and safe town, with a cobbled high street and many shops to explore and places to eat or meet with friends. The University is also in close proximity to London, a 35-minute train ride away from an abundance of activities and business opportunities. I chose Surrey because it has everything I was looking for, a course I enjoy, a strong reputation, employability experience, a safe and ideal location, the opportunity to integrate with other cultures, and endless ways to become involved and make the most of my university experience.
As a first-year International Business Management student, I am studying a programme that I am passionate about with modules that are intellectually engaging. It gives me the opportunity to specialise in an area of business and learn about issues that affect the world. At Surrey, the course content is revised often to encourage us to reflect and be informed on the current events and technology that is impacting the business world. Surrey Business School aims to prepare us to become the next generation of business leaders by teaching us relevant content for our careers, bringing awareness to the evolving nature of the business world and strengthen our communication skills.
"My journey here at the University of Surrey has made me confident that with my education and the work placement opportunity, I will be well-equipped with the skills and knowledge to succeed in my future career."
In our first week, we were already working in teams to produce our own business app or product. The assignments are varied and encourage students to strengthen their writing, presenting skills and critical thinking. I’m looking forward to the year in industry in my 3rd year as this will enable me to gain first-hand experience in the working world and enhance my employability. My journey here at the University of Surrey has made me confident that with my education and the work placement opportunity, I will be well-equipped with the skills and knowledge to succeed in my future career.
The best things about my experience at Surrey so far are all of the opportunities that I have been able to participate in. The first year of university is an exciting time and there’s the chance to get involved in many activities and try new things. While there is a vast range of sports, societies and programmes to pick from, everyone will have a unique university experience depending on what you choose.
Some of my favourite activities and events have been doing a colour run during Welcome Week, having a Pets as Therapy event with dogs during exams time, and the weekly fruit and vegetable market in the Students Union. When I am not studying, you can find me taking French classes, furthering my career development in workshops, swimming at the amazing Surrey Sports Park, riding with the equestrian club, developing my coding skills or writing blog posts to share my adventures with others. It is a whole new chapter of my life to move 4000 miles from the USA to England, but this transition has enabled me to grow as a person, embrace change and become immersed in a new culture. It has been an incredible year at Surrey and I am excited for the journey ahead!"
