"My supervisors have provided me with continuous support, encouragement and endless patience since I started my PhD."

Entry year

2017

I decided to undertake a PhD in Biomedical Engineering because I want to become a professional researcher with a deep understanding of biomechanics. At the same time, I wanted to challenge myself, improve my problem solving and communication skills, and increase my confidence. I believe that my PhD will help me to achieve these goals.

I chose to come to Surrey for my PhD because it’s one of the UK’s leading universities, with a reputation for excellence in both teaching and research, and highly ranked for mechanical engineering.

My PhD project focuses on developing an objective tool to assess the upper extremity function, which involves using current methods to analyse patients with shoulder pain compared to a healthy population.

The facilities I’m able to use at Surrey to conduct my research are excellent. Within the Innovation for Health learning laboratory, I have access to the Human Movement Lab, which includes equipment to analyse gait (walking patterns) and upper limb movement such as a motion capture system, force platforms, pressure mat and Electromyography (EMG) kit.

My supervisors have provided me with continuous support, encouragement and endless patience since I started my PhD. With their help I’ve had my abstract accepted for the 8th World Congress of Biomechanics – the largest global forum for research on the mechanics of biological systems and the body. This means that I will get to present my research to a large international audience of experts and receive their feedback, which will be incredibly valuable.

My supervisors have also given me the opportunity to work as a teaching assistant and lab demonstrator for various undergraduate and Masters modules in mechanical and biomedical engineering.

Aside from my academic studies, I’m really enjoying studying at Surrey for other reasons. Guildford is filled with modern facilities and beautiful historic buildings, a theatre and attractive parks, while Surrey Sports Park is one of Europe’s premier venues for sport, health, wellbeing and leisure. With easy access to London, the South Coast, Heathrow and Gatwick airports by motorway or rail, it’s easy to see why Guildford is such a sought-after location.

After finishing my PhD, I’d like to continue to develop my academic career, write papers and attend seminars in my field. Ultimately, I’d love to become a lecturer at the University!
