"I’ve always been interested in improving my skills by conducting research at a very high level. I considered the University of Surrey the best place to study. The EngD in Sustainability offers the opportunity to conduct academic research whilst also working in industry, which gives you the chance to apply your research to the real world.
I studied civil and environmental engineering at the ‘Federico II’ University of Naples, Italy. My undergraduate programme was focused on innovative techniques for landslide mitigation and my masters programme was focused on the control of urban transformations, with a particular focus on water management.
I thought Surrey’s Sustainability EngD programme would give me the unique opportunity to challenge myself. I started less than a year ago and so far it has been an amazing educational experience. In a few months I already feel more competent in my field of study and more personally developed.
My supervisors give me constant guidance on technical topics, as well as on areas for my personal development. In addition, they ensure the growth of my strengths by continuously challenging me.
The programme began with three months of initial training, during this time I attended modules, workshops and seminars at the University.
My research project is in partnership with Thames Water Utilities Ltd, where I am currently based, using their facilities and resources for my research. My research is carried out in partnership with the Innovation Department of Thames Water Utilities, which is a unique research collaboration opportunity. I have also had many opportunities to work in collaboration with other researchers and academics at the University.
My research started a few months ago and currently my best achievement is that my research work is valuated and recognised by Thames Water Utilities, but I hope the best achievements are yet to come.
I really enjoy being part of such an international and culturally diverse environment."
