Seoul National University, South KoreaI chose Surrey’s Mechanical Engineering course because it offers a general first year across all courses in the School of Mechanical Engineering Sciences which gives you the chance to learn about other fields of engineering before taking more specialised modules in the later years. The University of Surrey also appealed because, having lived in London my whole life, I was very keen on experiencing life outside the city.
The elements of my course I most enjoy are the more technical and specialised modules because they give an insight into how maths and physics theories are relevant in real life situations.
The facilities here are very accessible, with computer labs open 24/7, and the academic staff are very supportive, especially when it comes to giving you further assistance on module topics, advice on study or career options, and references for work placements.
"I’ve grown to be much more independent and confident in myself and my abilities since coming to Surrey, and the skills I’ve gained have allowed me to manage and take control of my own learning as well as my future."
I knew before I came to Surrey that I’d like to study abroad, and the fact that the University offers this option was another reason for coming here. I spent my second year studying at Seoul National University in South Korea. This was an unforgettable and valuable learning experience, and certainly one of the most exciting and rewarding years of my life. I got to learn in depth about another culture, made lifelong friends with students from all over the world, tried and fell in love with all sorts of new dishes, learned a new language, and adjusted to daily life in a country that is very different to the UK.
During my time in Korea, I took a module in robotics and control which gave me an insight into a field of engineering I’d never studied before. This has prompted me to move from the MEng to the BEng course as I now want to study for a more specialised masters in the field of robotics. I hope to do this in Japan where a lot of research in the field of robotics is being led.
I’ve grown to be much more independent and confident in myself and my abilities since coming to Surrey, and the skills I’ve gained have allowed me to manage and take control of my own learning as well as my future.
