PhD positions

Every year we advertise funded PhD projects around the autumn time. We encourage interested candidates to inquire about opportunities. 

The Physics PhD page has information about applications and studentships. For study in 2019 one can apply for the Vice-Chancellor's Studentship Award and the Doctoral College Studentship Award.

Fellowships

We are keen to attract talented candidates on personal fellowships, including:

Surrey Research Fellowship - aimed at highly talented early-career researchers who want to develop into an independent leader in their area of research. Funded by the University of Surrey including salary at RA2 level (£40,792 to £48,677) and up to £15,000 per year for travel, consumables and other expenses. | Duration: 3 years.

Dorothy Hodgkin Fellowship - "This scheme offers you the opportunity to hold appointments on a part-time basis or convert from full-time to part-time and back again to help match work and other commitments, such as parental or caring responsibilities etc.” and is for people with less than 6 years of postdoctoral experience. | Duration: 5 years.

Branco Weiss Fellowship - If your project departs from the mainstream of research in your discipline and you are “keen on engaging in a dialogue across your particular discipline”, e.g. astronomy outreach and/or data visualisation. | Duration: 5 years.

Royal Commission for the Exhibition of 1851 - “Do you have 3 years or less post-doctoral research experience and want to conduct innovative research of your own instigation?” | Duration: 3 years.

Newton International Fellowship - Covers a broad range of physical, natural and social sciences and the humanities and is for non-UK citizens with less than 7 years of postdoctoral research experience. | Duration: 2 years.

Marie Sklodowska-Curie Actions - Duration: 2 years.

STFC Rutherford fellowship - Duration: 5 years.

Royal Society University Research Fellowship - Duration: 5+3 years.

Royal Astronomical Society Fellowships - Duration: 3 years.
