The award is part of a £50 million investment in the national RDS network which operates from 10 regional centres across England.

The RDS SE is a collaboration between DCEM  the School of Health Sciences at the University of Brighton and the Centre for Health Services Studies (CHSS), at the University of Kent.

Now in its tenth year, the network provides free and confidential research design and methodological support to health and social care researchers in the NHS South East Coast region, helping them to develop grant applications to the NIHR and other national peer-reviewed funding programmes.

It advises on all aspects of preparing grant applications, including:

  • formulating research questions
  • building an appropriate research team
  • involving patients and the public
  • designing a study
  • appropriate methodologies
  • health economics
  • identifying suitable funding sources
  • regulatory issues
  • writing lay summaries
  • identifying the resources required for a successful project

The RDS SE has academic leads in each centre, a team of research advisers that includes health economists and statisticians and administrative staff.

Dr Bernadette Egan, who leads the team at Surrey, said: “We are very pleased to receive this welcome news that the National Institute for Health Research has awarded us a further five years of funding to continue our work as the Research Design Service SE.

“We look forward to continuing our work with health and social care researchers in the South East, supporting them to improve the design of their research funding proposals and encouraging the involvement of patients and the public wherever possible.”

The new funding will be provided over five years from 1 October 2018.
