Dr Liam Murray Bell

Dr Liam Murray Bell is author of So It Is, written during his Creative Writing doctoral studies at the University of Surrey and shortlisted for Scottish Book of the Year 2013 in the First Book Category.

Dr Liam Murray Bell is author of So It Is, written during his Creative Writing doctoral studies at the University of Surrey and shortlisted for Scottish Book of the Year 2013 in the First Book Category. The Guardian described So It Is as a ‘no-holds-barred debut’ while The Observer said: ‘Bell’s debut novel offers a fresh perspective on The Troubles.’

His second novel, The Busker, supported by Arts Council England, was published in May 2014 and awarded Scottish Book Trust Pick of the Year 2014.

Before completing his PhD at Surrey, Dr Murray Bell studied for an MLitt in Creative Writing at the University of Glasgow and a BA (Hons) in English Literature with Creative Writing at Queen's University, Belfast. He is now Lecturer of Creative Writing at the University of Stirling, where
he teaches on the BA and MLitt programmes.

Dr Murray Bell said: "The PhD at Surrey gave me the time and space to write So It Is, but also a framework that allowed me to build a career as both an academic and published writer."
