"During my placement, I was offered the opportunity to interview members of the public at the Wimbledon Tennis Championships, about the 25-year partnership between IBM and Wimbledon, and was selected to ghost-write a blog for an IBM executive."
"I’ve really enjoyed my time at the University so far – Surrey has a fantastic community feel about it, and everyone is friendly and welcoming. My lecturers are very hardworking and their support has enabled me to develop not just academically, but also socially and personally, as well as maturing professionally through my third-year placement.
I completed my Professional Training placement at IBM. The placement year was an important factor when I chose the University of Surrey, as it was the only university in the UK offering an English Literature course with a year in industry – I believe that a placement definitely makes you more attractive to potential employers.
My department supported me with pre-placement workshops and workplace visits, and my previous position as Deputy Editor of The Stag (Surrey’s student newspaper) gave me valuable experience that I used when working in the IBM design team, creating user interfaces for IBM software. I was also in charge of recruitment for the team, which was rewarding as I felt that I could make a really positive impact.
During my time at IBM, I also shadowed PR professionals, attended workshops and networked with industry experts, as well as expanding my skills through teaching ICT at a local primary school. I was also offered the opportunity to interview members of the public at the Wimbledon Tennis Championships, about the 25-year partnership between IBM and Wimbledon, and was selected to ghost-write a blog for an IBM executive.
My Professional Training placement improved my time management and communication skills, and has made me more proactive in my studies. I now have greater determination and focus for my future – I’d like to go into PR after I graduate, and my placement has motivated me to achieve that goal through gaining experience at a PR company during my final year."
