"I completed a 50-week placement at Goldman Sachs in the private wealth management division. It was a great opportunity to get some longer-term experience in a professional environment before leaving university."
"When applying for universities, I was very keen to do a placement year, which was one of my main reasons for choosing Surrey, given the University’s close connections with numerous reputable employers. This, combined with the chance of doing a semester abroad, made Surrey a stand out option.
I decided to study BSc Business Economics because the course combines the complexities of economic theories with that of business processes, which would provide me with an understanding of a wide variety of subjects. Especially in the final year, it’s fantastic to have the option of a broad range of modules, from econometrics to economic history.
From the moment I joined the University, there have been opportunities to meet the faculty academics, whether that was at the Welcome Week networking events, or meeting my personal tutor for the first time. The Economics and Finance Society has been great to be a part of. During the first year, there were numerous events both on campus and in London too, as well as guest speakers at the University.
Guildford’s location and the fact that the University is campus-based is fantastic. Everything you need is very accessible, whether that is the shops, restaurants, bars, or the plethora of pubs Guildford has to offer. Being 35 minutes outside of London by train also offers a massive advantage when interviews for placements or graduate jobs start to pick up. Being in my final year, I have spent a lot of time in the library on campus, and it is a truly fantastic place to work. There are sections for quiet study, group study and silent study if you are looking for a more intensive study session. It is also great that it’s open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, so there’s always the opportunity to do some work in the appropriate environment.
My Professional Training year was one of my favourite parts of the course. I completed a 50-week placement at Goldman Sachs in the Private Wealth Management division. It was a great opportunity to get some longer-term experience in a professional environment before leaving university. It was also incredibly interesting to see how a business operates, and to meet people, both junior and senior, from a variety of backgrounds both professionally and socially. It gave me a solid understanding of the sort of role I would be looking to take on upon leaving Surrey.

During the application process, the careers department is with you at every step. At the early stages, they offer sessions to go through your CV and cover letter, and towards the latter stages they help with mock interviews in order to give you the best possible chance of securing a placement.
My best moment at Surrey so far was definitely the semester I spent in Singapore at Singapore Management University. I met people from all over the world, ate some fantastic food, and got to travel to countries I had never visited before. I also really enjoyed living in what can now be seen as the financial ‘hub’ of Asia, especially as an economics student. I would recommend the exchange programme to anyone with a global outlook who is looking to experience university in a foreign country. I have enjoyed every part of the course so far and feel the whole experience of being at Surrey has added significant value to me as a person, not just academically, but socially too.
After graduating, I will spend a couple of months on vacation before starting a graduate job as a forensic accountant. Throughout my time at the University, I feel I have developed my work ethic, learnt masses about my specific subject but also about myself, and feel I now have a plan in terms of a career.
I would recommend studying at Surrey to anyone. It is an international university, with great people and great opportunities, and it undoubtedly adds value to you as a person."
