What was your role on placement?

I was an Engineering Operations Technician Intern at The Estée Lauder Companies. My role was focused on project and financial management: I collaborated with a diverse team of engineers to address problems, collect data, conduct tests, assemble equipment, document performance and perform line trials. I was also responsible for maintaining the functionality of all machinery used in the facility.

What was the highlight of your time on placement?

I had full autonomy over the 11 projects I implemented during my placement which was exhilarating!

What were the most important things you learned?

One of my greatest achievements was overcoming my fear of public speaking. I had to deliver presentations to senior management and global teams, provide training to technical operators and engineers, and was in constant communication with vendors and contractors – all of which helped me to improve my social skills.

"I also learned that when it comes to project management there is no one-size-fits-all approach. In industry, each project brings a unique set of complications in terms of pressure, deadlines, regulations and accreditations. With the help of my manager, who served as my mentor, I gained a valuable insight into handling these complex challenges."

Was it hard working 9-5 after being a student?

No, as I’m naturally a morning person. Also my contract was flexible and allowed me to determine my own working hours – for example I opted to work an additional hour every day which then allowed me to take a day off.

Describe your placement in three words.

Truly exceptional experience.

Was it hard to settle back into life as a student after your placement?

I found the transition to be relatively seamless. The skills and experiences I’d gained on placement really enhanced my understanding of the material we covered in classes.

What will you do when you graduate?

I’m delighted to have secured a role with Leonardo as a Graduate Project Manager. My placement experience was invaluable in my job search – particularly in preparing for interview and developing my CV and cover letter. My placement also allowed me to develop a range of transferable skills such as problem solving, teamwork and communication which are highly valued by employers. It prepared me well for my future career.
