Study
We provide world-class analysis of ceramics, polymers and metals, as well as composite materials consisting of two or more of these materials. Doing a PhD with us will allow you to use our nationally and internationally recognised facilities to test the cutting-edge of science and make new discoveries.
What we are researching
We are working across four research areas.
Research excellence

In the latest Research Excellence Framework (REF 2014) 80 per cent of our combined mechanical engineering research was rated as world-leading or internationally excellent, placing Surrey in 22nd place out of 106 institutions submitted in the Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Metallurgy and Materials category.
Our course
The course will give you the knowledge, skills and expertise needed for a career in engineering, research or academia.
Expert support
The Doctoral College supports the academic and professional development of postgraduate researchers to ensure our world-leading research continues to grow. There is also an extensive Researcher Development Programme run at university level.
